it is said that one keeps learning through out life-and this lesson was forced into my consciousness recently-
as someone dealing with surgical issues for twenty eight years-attaining the rarified heights of professorship of surgery-making profound pronouncements about surgical issues-with juniors scribbling these pronouncements in small notebooks-we feel that the statements we make are as important as the the tablets given to moses by yahweh in the old testament.
my comeuppance was in dealing with a small very dirty , but very affectionate black-sometimes brown-depending on the amount of mud he carries on his body-labrador dog.
just two days ago , i discovered that my mother in law hat a heart attack-and i must declare that my mother in inlaw is the opposite of the much maligned role model-in fact she is like my second mother-and coming back after an angiogram for my mother in law-i found my small smelly labrador running around in circles with a heavy bleed from his ear-spraying blood all over the house-
the amount of blood he had bled would have killed him if we had been late by half an hour-i must now clarify how this boy had his ear torn-accustomed to dictating events in our house-ever since he adopted us 2 years ago-this lothario has fixed his attentions on a piebald skinny female who struts her wares across our gates-but has her own brand of wild male admirers-who are jealous green eyed characters just waiting for this sort of domesticated character.
to cut a long story short, we tried to catch this smelly character to stop his bleeding-our panic must have been conveyed to him -because he ran everywhere spraying blood-till i finally caught him-and looking at the amount of blood lost-i calledmy son and asked him to get a needle and black thread-to suture the bleeding artery-
as a surgeon you are dealing with human beings-now let us understand the dogs psyche-he was having a pleasurable moment with his love-he was chased off-but he had his moments-now something is dripping from the ear-and he was licking it-and this big hairy man who comes once a day-sticks a big needle-the result
of my efforts to stop the bleed were two very deep bites to my hands.
it is at this moment of time -that my son -a recently qualified doctor-made a statement-cobbler stick to your last-and then we bundled up this dog in a blanket-went to a very professional vet-who first muzzled the dog-injected an anaesthetic-and then calmly cauterised the bleeding area-reminding me of the statement-cobbler stick to your last-i hope my ayurveda, homeopapathy and unani colleagues-understand what i am talking about!

dear bunty,
the bite to my hand was very superficial-because dogs do understand people who love them
